What is Segregated Witness?

Segregated Witness (SegWit) is a soft fork protocol upgrade for the Bitcoin blockchain that occured in August of 2017. The goal of SegWit was to improve transaction throughput while decreasing transaction malleability. This change increased Bitcoin's block capacity, and was important for increasing the network's scalability for the long term.
